It’s not quite summer, but ice cream season is definitely upon us! I don’t know about you, but I can’t turn down a tasty cold treat when it’s hot outside. I created this ice cream emergent reader to inspire some fun counting and reading this summer. This simple reader is perfect for preschool learners and focuses on:
- Counting to 5
- Writing numbers 1-5
- Simple sight words: I, see, no
- One to one correspondence
Ice Cream Emergent Reader Directions:
- Print a copy of the emergent reader for your child to use. Click here to instantly download it! Be sure to check your email too for information about accessing my entire free resource library.
- Cut each page of the book apart. Dotted line are on each page to help your guide your little one’s cutting. If you child is just beginning to use scissors, check these out! They were recommended by occupational therapist, Sabrina Adair in this post.
- Put the book pages in order and staple the book together. A page number is located in the bottom corner of each page.
- Color and complete each page in the book by writing the missing number. This book would be really fun to color with these markers, they are skinny like a pencil and smell like ice cream! On the last page of the book, you child will practice inferring.
What is inferring?
Inferring is a reading comprehension skill and higher order thinking skill that your child will need. It means figuring something out through reasoning. This story ends with there being no scoops of ice cream. Your little one will draw a picture of what they they happened to the ice cream. It could have been eaten or melted or… The story doesn’t say, but your child will use their previous experiences of ice cream (it’s yummy and it melts) to make a inference about what happened.
I hope you are able to use this ice cream emergent reader with your little ones! Here are a few other fun ice cream activities to check out too!
