I am Thankful Writing Alphabet

I have been doing this Thanksgiving writing activity since my first year of teaching! This activity is fun for children (and adults) of all ages! Challenge your little ones to think of something they are thankful for using each letter of the alphabet! This activity can also be completed as a class or a family if you have little ones who aren’t quite writing yet! If you are in the classroom, this would be a great addition to a writing center or morning activity!

Directions for I am Thankful Writing Alphabet

Here are a few easy ways to use the Thankful Alphabet in your classroom or home:

1. Kick off a class discussion about gratitude. Ask your students what it means to be thankful and share a few examples together.
2. Model the activity by filling out the first few letters together as a class or family.
3. Let kids complete their lists independently or with partners.
4. Share your thankfulness! Invite students to share one or two of their favorite words aloud. You can also create a bulletin board or “Thankful Wall” to display everyone’s work.
5. Send it home over the break as a family activity. It’s a lovely way to encourage reflection and connection at home.

How to Use Thankful Alphabet Thanksgiving Writing

Here are a few ideas for using this activity:

• Send it home with families to complete over the Thanksgiving holiday break
• Use it as a quick morning work activity
• Add it to your writing station
• Use it as your writing workshop activity
• Have students turn their ideas into complete sentences to practice writing. For example, if a student wrote the word “family” for the letter F they could write the sentence, ” I am thankful for family.”
• Use it in a poster maker machine to turn it into a poster to complete together as a class

Why Gratitude Matters

Taking time to notice what we’re thankful for helps children (and adults!) build mindfulness, empathy, and joy. It shifts the focus from “what we want” to “what we already have.” During the busy holiday season, that’s a reminder we can all use.

The I am Thankful Alphabet is a simple way to spark meaningful conversations and create a lasting keepsake of what matters most right now.
