Many classrooms have word walls and you can easily have one at home too! Word walls are exactly what they sound like: a wall of words! They are organized alphabetically and are a resource for kids to use while reading and writing. Usually the words on a word wall are words that little ones see often and should be familiar with. You will usually see high frequency words, student names, number words and color words on a word wall. All words on a word wall should be familiar! If you are creating a word wall at home I recommend using a display board or even using the refrigerator. Many teachers (myself included) like including seasonal words on their word walls like these St. Patricks’s Day Word Cards!

Seasonal words can also be a fun addition to a word walls or added to a writing station or play area in the home. I created these St. Patrick’s Day Word Cards for you to use the month of March! Download them for free HERE. I always recommend printing on this and laminating will help the cards last longer too. They can be discussed and added to a word wall or here are a few other ideas for using them:

• Sort the words into alphabetical order. Putting words in alphabetical order (to the second letter) is a skill usually learned in first grade.
• Hide the cards around your classroom or living room. Little ones can find the cards and practice writing each word. Even older preschoolers would enjoy this!
• Practice writing each word into a sentence.
• Print two sets of cards and turn them into a word matching game. The picture is still there for reading support too!
