Lemonade Procedural Writing
Procedural writing is an important type of informational writing for younger students. Often times it is taught by having a simple experience with your students, then writing about the steps together using interactive writing. Procedural writing usually involves writing specific steps using the vocabulary: first, next, then, and last. Students can also use numbers to organize their writing.
Experiences are a great thing for little ones to write about! It’s easy to make it hands-on and fun; plus it truly gives their writing a purpose! The first part of this activity is making the lemonade with your students.

How do you make lemonade in the classroom?
The easiest way make lemonade in the classroom is using a powdered lemonade mix. You just simply mix the powder with water and add ice and a straw! You could also use a frozen lemonade concentrate or even make it from scratch using sugar and lemon juice!
I highly recommend making lemonade with your students in the classroom prior to completing the craft and writing activity. It will be helpful for students to have that experience to reflect on as they write or draw.
Procedural Writing Anchor Chart
After making lemonade with your students, I recommend writing the steps together as a class. Here is an example of what your steps might look like:
First, put two scoops of lemonade powder into a cup.
Next, add 1 cup of water.
Then, stir the powder and water together.
Last, add ice and enjoy the lemonade!
A few different procedural writing options are included in my product, How to Make Lemonade Craft and Procedural Writing to meet the needs of your students!
Younger students can even draw pictures of the process of making lemonade!
Lemonade Writing Vocabulary Cards
These picture vocabulary cards can also be used to help students write about the process of making lemonade. I recommend printing them, laminating them, and then adding them to a pocket chart for students to reference.
These cards are great for building vocabulary and helping students feel confident while writing!
