For full disclosure, I did receive a subscription to Homer Reading for free to test out. However, they don’t even know that I am writing this post! As a former Kindergarten and First Grade teacher and a busy mom, I wanted to share my genuine thoughts and opinion of the Homer Reading app with you! I hope this post is helpful as you make a decision about using this educational app with your child!
Why Homer Reading?
As you may already know we have a recently become a two child household. One of the biggest challenges of having a new baby with a toddler has been figuring out how to keep my oldest occupied while I am busy doing things with the baby. You know like feeding…It’s been really tough finding things to keep her busy and out of the bathroom unraveling the toilet paper. Toddler mamas, I know you understand.
We have this tablet that we ordered for EK to use on a long road trip a few months ago, so I decided to pull it out and see what I could find for toddlers. I wanted something she could do for just a few minutes a day that would be educational and also easy for her to navigate. Let me save you some time. The options are very disappointing, not appropriate for toddlers and full of ads. I had pretty much given up until I found Homer Reading! At the time of publishing this post, I think it is the absolute best educational app for toddlers!
Getting Started
Homer Reading is one of the few programs When you sign up for Homer Reading, you will create a quick profile for your child. You will answer a few questions about your child’s age, interests and current learning level. Don’t worry, these are simple questions like:
Up to four child profiles can be created with your membership! From there, the Homer Reading App will take over and create a personalized learning path for your child.
- Can your child match uppercase and lowercase letters?
- Can your child hear the first sound in a word?
- Can your child correctly sound up to 10 objects?
Homer Reading Ages
Homer Reading is an ideal app for children ages 2 to 8. The content is divided into five age groups:
- Toddler
- Preschool
- Pre-K
- Early learner
- Growing learner (6+)
You can read what is taught at each age HERE! EK just turned 2, so we have been really enjoying the toddler content! She is learning things like colors, shapes, number recognition, counting, letters and naming emotions.
Homer Reading Subject Areas
So I know the name says “reading,” but SO much more is covered in the Homer Reading App! One of my favorite things about this program is that is goes beyond just the academic skills and also focuses on social and emotional learning too! Homer Reading actually covers five main subject areas:
- Reading
- Math
- Social and emotional learning
- Creativity
- Thinking skills!
Homer Reading App Dashboard
After your child’s profile has been created, they will have a personalized dashboard. Each child’s dashboard will have the following sections:
- Songs
- Stories
- Math
- Games
- Creativity
- Reading
- Practice
Homer Reading Activities
Inside of each section, your child will find tons of activities just for them. Here is a peek at a few of the activities EK has been enjoying on her learning journey.
She absolutely loves the songs section! I love that there are no creepy ads for her to accidentally click on. Also, the words to each song are displayed on the screen with the song so your child can begin developing concepts of print!
This is one of her favorite math activities: Icing on the Cake. She is practicing tracing numbers with her finger. Some of the other math skills she is working on are counting, shapes and colors!
EK is working on letters on her Reading Pathway! It’s very basic since she is just 2! It’s just showing her what a letter looks like and very basic exposure to letters! As she progresses she will start learning letter names, uppercase and lowercase letter matching, letter sounds, and more!
Final Thoughts
Overall, I absolutely love the Homer Reading App! I have found the activities to be developmentally appropriate and focused on the correct skills for each age level. It is also extremely user-friendly for both parents and kids! EK really hasn’t ever used a tablet or iPhone and was very quickly able to figure out how to navigate the app and access her favorite songs and activities. I feel really good about what she is learning and it has been amazing for keeping her busy. This is the best educational app for toddlers and young children!

As always, nothing replaces hands-on learning for children. I always recommend talking to your pediatrician about how much screen time is appropriate for your child and of course doing your research on any content your child is consuming.
