It feels a little strange to call butcher paper trendy, but I think it is! There are so many amazing ways to use it for learning! Just order this giant roll of paper and it will literally keep your littles entertained for years. This post will give you 10 butcher paper learning activities that can be used with toddlers and preschoolers!
Oh and one more thing, ALL of these activities will take you 2 minutes or less to prep. You’ll also see very quickly that my art skills are limited. Each of the butcher paper learning activities also only uses simple materials that hopefully you are already have around the house like markers (these are my favorite) and stickers and dice.
Butcher Paper Math Ideas
Donut Dice
Draw some donuts on a piece of butcher paper and give your child a dice to roll. They will roll the dice and draw that many sprinkles on their donut. They can also roll the dice multiple times and draw sprinkles in different colors!
Flower Garden
Use markers to draw flowers without petals. In the middle of each flower write a number and encourage your child to draw that many petals on each flower.
Dot Counting
This one is as easy as it gets! Crooked lines are totally fine too! 😜
Draw some boxes or circles on a piece of butcher paper and give your child dot markers, stickers or any other manipulative to practice counting! Help your child put the correct number of dots, stickers or manipulatives in each box! They could also draw objects with a marker! If your little one is ready for a challenge:
- Put the numbers out of order
- Try the teen numbers
- Write addition facts and they can practice using two different manipulatives to build and solve the problem
Butcher Paper Literacy Ideas
Dot Names
We love using these dot markers for tons of different activities! For this activity, write your child’s name large on a piece of butcher paper. Let them use dot makers to stamp their name.
Eyeball Letters
Learning letters? Try this Eyeballs Letter activity with butcher paper and markers! Draw smiley faces without eyeballs and write a letter for the nose! If you are just beginning to work on letter names with your child, focus on the letter in their name!
Next, have your child say each letter and draw an eyeball (or use a sticker) for each time they say the letter! This activity could be modified for letter sounds, number names and sight words!

Rainbow Nails
First of all, I promise my fingers are not really this strangely shaped! For this activity, just trace your hands on butcher paper and draw some nails. Write different color words for your little one to read and color the nails that color. Your little one could also color the nails and you could write the color words together!
Other Butcher Paper Learning Activities
Line Trace
This is a great activity for toddlers! Just draw some large lines on butcher paper and let your little one line up toys on each line! We used these amazing periodic table wooden blocks and some duplos! This can also be done with dot stickers!
This activity can also be done with smaller lines and smaller materials for older children. For this activity, I just drew a pumpkin with various lines on the inside and used the mini erasers from Target to trace!
Picture Match
Do you remember the game memory? This activity is sort of a precursor to that! Draw matching pictures along each side of a piece of butcher paper. Your little one will draw a line to match each picture. Pictures can even be drawn that focus on skills your child is learning like shapes, colors or letters. This activity helps your child with:
- Controlling a writing device
- Encouraging attention to detail
- Improving their ability to find similarities and differences in objects
- Increasing vocabulary
