Have you ever heard of Emler Swim School? After I had EK, I started looking for activities for us to do together. Let me just tell you, there aren’t a lot of options for extracurricular activities for babies! In my google searching, I came across Emler Swim School. I was so excited to find a swim class that EK could participate in; even being only a few months old. We started the Bathtime Babies Class and have been swimming at Emler Swim School ever since! EK is so happy and confident in the water and I credit that to our amazing water experiences at Emler Swim School.
Interview with Callie Smith from Emler Swim School
I absolutely love the staff at Emler and wanted to introduce you to one of the smiling faces I see each week, Callie Smith. Callie is an aquatic expert and part of the staff at my local Emler Swim School. She was sweet enough to answer a few questions about aquatic safety that are helpful as you think about introducing your child to the water.
Why is aquatic safety important?
Learning to swim and to be water safe are life-saving skills that everyone should learn! Not only is swimming a fun recreational activity, but it’s also a skill that could save your child’s life! Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children under the age of five, and by enrolling in formal swim lessons you can decrease that risk of drowning by 88%.
What is the best age to start swimming lessons?
It’s never too early for your child to start learning the vital skills of water safety. At Emler Swim School we have lessons that start at as early as 2 months old!
What programs does Emler Swim School offer?
At Emler Swim School, safety is our #1 priority – our mission is to eliminate as many incidents of drowning as we can. Because of that, we have lessons starting at ages 2 months going all the way up to adults. We offer both group lessons, private lessons, and Swim Team year-round all within the comfort of our heated pools!
What can I expect in a swim class at Emler Swim School?
At Emler Swim School you can expect fun, friendly, and effective lessons with guaranteed results! All of our lessons follow our Award Winning Curriculum and are taught by our world-class instructors.
What can I do to help my child to feel comfortable in and around water?
The ultimate goal is for your child to grow a love for the water while also developing skills that will keep them safe and confident. By enrolling and attending year-round swim lessons, your child will be able to continuously become more comfortable around the water, and grow their swim skills.
Do you recommend using floaties or other floating devices with children?
Floatation is never a substitute for adult supervision in the water, however we suggest using USA Coast Guard approved floatation like life jackets or puddle jumpers!

Swim Lesson Must Haves:
I know your little one will love swimming at Emler! Here are a few helpful items to pack in your pool bag for each swim lesson!
- Swim diapers: Emler requires your child to wear two reusable swim diapers! Wearing two swim diapers on top of each other helps prevent any poop accidents leaking into the pool! I like putting on one swim diaper with snaps and then a pull up one on top of it. The snaps are nice if your baby poops because you don’t have to pull it down over their legs to get it off. I recommend waiting until you arrive at the swim school to put these on.
- A swim shirt: I think it’s easier to hold onto EK when she’s wearing a swim shirt! Babies are slippery! I love ordering a personalized one like this or check out Target!
- A hooded towel: Bring a hooded towel to wrap baby in and another towel to lay them on for changing.
- A wet bag! A wet bag is great for transporting the wet suit home in! This is the exact one that I use. It’s big enough for your clothes too!
- A change of clothes for the ride home.
