Becoming a big sister is a a big deal! Make the big sister to-be feel special and prepare for the change with some of the best big sister books! Many of these books also have a big brother version too!
Big Sister Books
I’m a Big Sister: We originally checked this book out of the library after the librarian recommended it. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times i have read this book. After we returned it to the library, we had to purchase a copy! It’s a super simple story that is perfect for little ones. Here is the big brother version.
I am a Big Sister: This book is really simple and a good pick for a toddler big sister. It’s a quick read and very basic. Like many books, it starts when the baby comes home from the hospital.
I am a Baby: We checked out this book from the library too and I really liked it for the vocabulary. It’s about babies and not big sisters, but it was a good one for talking about baby items like bibs, high chairs and it has real pictures of babies that my little one loved!
God Gave Us Two: This book is a written by a Christian author and talks about babies as a gift from God. It’s more cute and sweet than informational, but if you liked God Gave Us You, you’ll love this one too!
Snuggle the Baby: This book is interactive and perfect for toddlers and preschoolers especially. It gives your big sister opportunities to practice big sister duties like feeding and swaddling. It’s a must have!
Littles and How They Grow: This book can be purchased as either a hardback or a board book depending on your preference! We went with the board book! It features lots of diverse babies and families which is what I really liked about it! It’s more of a sweet and sentimental story of how it feels to love a baby.
I’m a Big Sister: This was sadly one of the only books I could find that featured a family of color. It’s a cute story about a big sister and her new baby brother. I thought the illustrations in the story were beautiful!

You’re a Big Sister: The doesn’t show the same family throughout the story. It shows both baby sisters and brothers and includes some diversity in the illustrations which is a huge plus for me! It’s another good pick for the 2-4 year old range.
Big Sister Learns All About Babies 1: This book is the first book in the series. It’s great for an older big sister and really talks about baby development at specific stages! This book is for months 0-3 or the itty bitty newborn stage. The big sister does things like help with tummy time and wash her hands before playing with the baby; so it’s very realistic and accurate. The other books in the series focus on months 3-6, months 6-9 and months 9-18.
The New Baby: This book is actually part of a four book series (the other titles include: Waiting for Baby, Look at Me and You and Me) and they are all wonderful! I liked that this story showed the mother breastfeeding in the illustration, so it helped foster a conversation on that to prepare big sister!
When You Were Inside Mommy: If you are looking for a book that is more focused on pregnancy than when the baby arrives, this is a great one! I felt like it was a great and factual book without being too overwhelming! Great for little ones with lots of questions.
