Creating a book is such a powerful learning experience for children. It is SO meaningful for them to share their ideas, illustrations and writing with others. This post is all about how to make your own printable alphabet book at home! Teachers, this would be a great “homework” project to send home with students too! This activity is appropriate for little ones learning the alphabet, so probably children ages 4-7. You can offer support to your child based on their developmental needs.
Directions:
- Print a copy of the alphabet book template for your child. The book is black and white, so no color ink is needed! It is available in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store or right HERE.
- Choose a letter page to complete. Walk around the house and find an object that begins with that letter. For example, your child might find an apple to go with the letter a. They will draw an apple on the letter Aa page. You could also look for pictures in a magazine, stickers, etc.
- Write the corresponding word on the letter page. I recommend having your child try to spell the word using inventive spelling. That just means that they stretch the word out and write the sounds that they hear. It doesn’t matter if the word is spelled correctly! It’s more important to build their writing confidence and encourage them than it is that they spell “banana” correctly.
- Complete the book. This activity can be spread out over a day, week or even a month! There is a cover and final alphabet page included in the download too!
- Read the book together…often! I recommend laminating it if you can! This book will really boost your child’s reading confidence because they can read it independently and they created it themselves.
Have fun making your own alphabet book!
