I have a very distinct memory from the day we brought EK home from the hospital. It was a Thursday and we were just so stinking tired from you know having a new baby and being at the hospital. I told my husband, “I can’t wait to get home and start our schedule and routine.” HA! Who says that with a 48 hour old newborn baby? Laugh all you want, but EK has always been the best sleeper and I credit some of that to our routines! These prayer sticks are one of my favorite parts of our nightly bedtime routine.
Prayer sticks are just a simple way for us to pray with EK each night. Each stick has a picture and name of a family member that we want to remember in our prayers. Each night we can pick out one or two sticks and pray by name for those people. I love that these can be used by children of any age, even babies!
Directions:
- Make a list family and friends that you want to include on your prayer sticks. Don’t forget to include yourself too! We also included our family dogs.
- Make a small card for each person with their name and picture. That visual support is so important for little ones! For mine, I used Microsoft Powerpoint and inserted 2 inch by 2 inch square boxes. Then I put text and a picture in each box. You could also print out pictures and write on them!
- Tape each picture card onto some sort of stick. I used these!
- Put all of the sticks into a small pail or bucket and you are ready to pray!
More Prayer Ideas:
Prayer journals can also be very powerful for children and help them to really feel like God is a friend that they can talk to. These printable prayer pages can easily be printed and put together to create a prayer journal for your little one. You can learn more and download them from my Teachers Pay Teachers store or right HERE. All pages are black and white to save ink and are appropriate for older toddlers to elementary students!
I hope that you can use prayer sticks or prayer journals with your little ones to teach the power of prayer.
