Winter is definitely my least favorite season. January always feels a little bit blah after all of the excitement of the holidays is over. It’s a good month to plan a few extra fun learning activities for your littles at home or in your classroom. This Winter Owls Ten Frame Match Up is a perfect free activity to make the season a little more fun!
It’s the perfect activity for little ones who are working on numbers to 10! Here are a few of the skills it incorporates:
- Exposure and understanding of ten frames as a math tool
- One to one correspondence
- Number recognition
- Counting to 10
These cards are also great for setting up a traditional memory match game. Matching games are also great for little ones. They are very simple to learn and play, plus it helps children develop a variety of important skills! Here are a few skills that playing memory will help develop:
- Visual recognition
- Memory and thinking skills
- Improves attention, concentration and focus
- Vocabulary
- Problem solving skills
Plus, playing any time of organized game with other adults or children gives children ways to practice social skills and experience different situations including:
- Sharing
- Taking turns
- Following an agreed on set of rules
- How it feels to win
- How it feels to lose
Directions for Winter Owls Ten Frame Match Up Game:
- Access and print the Winter Owls Ten Frame activity from my Free Resources Library or grab it from my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. Be sure to follow me there to be notified each time I post a new resource or freebie!
- Print the match up cards. I recommend printing the cards on white cardstock and running them through the laminator for extra durability.
- Next, cut the cards apart on or around the dotted lines. 10 sets of matching cards are included.
- Use the cards to play a traditional memory game. Mix up the cards and put them all face down. Players will take turns turning over two cards and seeing if they match. If the cards match, the player will keep both cards and have another turn!
