Fire Prevention Week happens every October. I think it’s really important to talk about this without scaring students, which can be hard to do! This post will cover some age-appropriate ideas and activities for preschool, kindergarten and first grade students!
Raise your hand if you teach reading and writing! ✋ Class books are one of my favorite tools for writing workshop time. They really help preschool and Kindergarten students get excited about learning to read and write. I’ve put together a set of my favorite printable class books totally free for you! These class books can be used throughout the school year and focus on skills like letter and number recognition, sight words, environmental print, and more! I know you’ll love writing and creating these books with your students!
My first year of teaching I got a phone call from a concerned parent. Their child had come home upset about a baby that had gotten into poison and did I know anything about that. Uhhh…🤷🏻♀️After some thinking I realized that we had watched a video about calling 911 and that was one of the scenarios in the video. Yikes! 🤦🏻♀️ I felt really terrible because it really scared their child! After I apologized and assured the parent that no baby was hurt, I really started thinking about how to talk about important safety things with littles ones without it being scary. Since October is Fire Safety Month and Fire Prevention Week; I have put together some age appropriate resources for you to use!

When is Fire Prevention Week?
Fire Prevention Week is the Sunday through Saturday that October 9 falls. Fire Prevention Week has been around since 1922 and was started to commemorate The Great Chicago Fire. It’s a week to teach about fire safety and educate your students and their families on how to prevent fires.
Books to Read for Fire Prevention Week
This is a great week to focus on expository texts! Students love learning about firefighters and all of their equipment too! If you can, this is a great week for local firefighters or a fire truck to come visit. Here are a few of my favorite books:
Activities for Fire Prevention Week
After you read a few books about fire safety, firefighters and fire trucks, your students will be ready for some activities. Here are a few of my favorite activities for students during fire safety week.
Firefighter Craft
This Firefighter Craft is one of my favorite crafts we make all year! Students have so much fun making it and it can be easily differentiated to meet the needs of your learners. It has been used for pre-k, preschool, kindergarten and first grade students. Inside of the firefighter’s coat, students will complete a writing activity. Students can draw a picture, write a few words or a few sentences about firefighters inside of the craft.
Firefighter Labeling
Labeling is one of my favorite activities. The options for labeling lessons are endless and it gives students a fun way to practice stretching out words and listening for letter sounds. Labeling is also a great way to focus on building vocabulary too. Students will enjoy coloring this firefighter and labeling his equipment and gear like his hat, boots, hose and more! You can download this firefighter labeling activity for free with a few other free fire prevention week printable activities including printable firefighter hat and more!
Write a Letter to a Firefighter
After your students learn all about firefighters, they may want to write letters to thank them for their service in the community. If you’re lucky enough to have firefighters come visit your school or classroom these letters are a great way for your students to show their appreciation. you are teaching preschool students about their community, be sure to check out these printable preschool journal prompts focused the community.
