February is Dental Health Month, and what better way to celebrate than with engaging, hands-on activities that get your preschoolers moving and learning? If you’re looking for dental health month activities for preschool that combine literacy, math, and healthy habits, you’re in the right place!
Today I’m sharing two of my favorite Write the Room activities that make learning about dental health exciting and interactive. These preschool dental health activities will have your students up, moving, and practicing essential skills—all while learning about taking care of their teeth!
Why Write the Room Activities Work for Preschool Dental Health
Write the Room activities are perfect for young learners because they:
Keep kids moving – Preschoolers need to move! These activities let them explore the classroom while learning, which is perfect for their developing bodies and brains and keep them engaged!
Engage multiple skills – Students practice counting, number recognition, reading, and writing all in one activity. Plus, they’re learning important dental health vocabulary!
Build independence – Once you model the activity, students can work independently or with partners, giving you time to observe and support as needed.
Make learning fun – When learning feels like a scavenger hunt, students are naturally more engaged and excited about the content.
Reinforce healthy habits – February is the perfect time to teach preschoolers about dental health, and these themed activities make the lessons stick.
Activity #1: Dental Health Month Count and Write the Room
This dental health math activity is perfect for preschoolers who are working on counting and number recognition from 1-10.
How It Works
Students move around the classroom to find dental-themed counting cards. Each card displays objects arranged in a tens frame – a visual tool that helps young learners understand quantity and develop number sense. Students count the dental objects (like toothbrushes, teeth, toothpaste, and more) and record their answers on their recording sheet.
What Makes This Activity Special
Tens frames for math success – Using tens frames helps preschoolers visualize numbers and builds a strong foundation for future math skills. It’s not just counting—it’s understanding quantity!
Dental health themed – Every counting card features adorable dental-themed clipart that reinforces vocabulary like toothbrush, tooth, dentist, and floss while students practice math.
Numbers 1-10 – Perfect for preschool and Pre-K students who are developing their counting skills and number recognition.
Easy to differentiate – Use all the cards for students who are confident counters, or start with just numbers 1-5 for students who need more support.
Skills Practiced
- Counting objects 1-10
- One-to-one correspondence
- Number recognition
- Number writing
- Fine motor skills (writing numbers)

Activity #2: Dental Health Month Read and Write the Room
This literacy-focused Write the Room is perfect for preschoolers who are beginning to recognize words and practice writing. It focuses on important dental health vocabulary that students will use throughout the month.
How It Works
Students search the classroom for cards featuring dental health vocabulary words like “floss,” “dentist,” “tooth,” “brush,” and more. When they find a card, they read (or use picture clues to identify) the word and write it on their recording sheet. This activity combines reading, writing, and movement into one engaging experience!
What Makes This Activity Special
Real-world vocabulary – Students learn words they’ll actually use when talking about dental health. Words like “dentist” and “floss” become familiar and meaningful.
Picture support – Each word card includes dental-themed images to help emergent readers identify the words, making this accessible for all learners.
Writing practice – Preschoolers get valuable practice forming letters and writing words in a fun, purposeful context.
Builds confidence – As students successfully find and write each word, they gain confidence in their reading and writing abilities.
Skills Practiced
- Sight word recognition
- Vocabulary development (dental health terms)
- Letter formation and handwriting
- Reading environmental print
- Fine motor skills
- Health and wellness concepts

How to Use Write the Room Activities in Your Preschool Classroom
Both of these dental health activities are incredibly versatile! Here are some ways to use them:
Whole Group Introduction – Model the activity together as a class. Walk to one or two cards together and show students how to count/read and record their answers.
Learning Centers – Set these up at a literacy or math center. Students can complete them independently or with a partner during center time.
Indoor Recess – Need a purposeful activity for those cold February days when students can’t go outside? Write the Room activities are perfect!
Early Finishers – Keep recording sheets available for students who finish other work early. They’ll stay engaged with meaningful practice.
Partner Work – Pair students up! One can find the cards while the other records, then they switch. This builds collaboration skills and makes the activity even more fun.
Tips for Success with Preschool Dental Health Activities
Prep ahead – Laminate your cards for durability! These activities can be used year after year.
Strategic placement – Hang cards at preschooler eye level and spread them around the room. Mix up easy-to-reach and slightly hidden spots to add to the scavenger hunt feel.
Clipboards are key – Give students clipboards to make them feel official and professional. It also makes writing easier while standing or moving.
Model, model, model – Show students exactly what to do before setting them loose. Walk through 2-3 examples together.
Differentiate – Use fewer cards for students who need support, or challenge advanced students to put the numbers in order or alphabetize the words after completing the activity.
