What are CVC Words?
CVC simply stands for Consonant Vowel Consonant. These are the simple (usually) three-letter words that beginning readers learn to read first. A few examples of CVC words are cat, dog, map, hot, etc.
CVC words can be read when little ones can blend the sounds in the word together. To read these simple words, children need to know letter sounds including short vowel sounds, and have a strong phonemic awareness understanding. CVC words are usually taught in Kindergarten.

Gingerbread CVC Word Write the Room
I love activities that get students moving around the room! For this activity, students will find each each gingerbread man card. Each card has a picture of a CVC word. Students will use their response sheet to write the matching CVC word.
5 different write the room activities are included in this set, one for each short vowel. 10 words are included for each short vowel sound.
An answer key is included so students can check their own work after they complete each CVC Short Vowel Gingerbread Read and Write the Room activity.
This is the perfect activity for reviewing CVC words before the holidays! I recommend doing one vowel at a time. The CVC word pictures used also coordinate with this set: CVC Word Picture Match with Short Vowel and Word Family Sorting Headers
CVC Medial Vowel Sort
There are many different ways to sort CVC words. For this activity, students will sort CVC words by the middle vowel.
Students will say each CVC word aloud, put it on the correct cookie sheet and then write the CVC word on the response page.
An answer key is also included for this activity as well.
CVC Real and Nonsense Word Sort
When teaching CVC words, incorporating both real and nonsense words can be highly effective for building early reading skills.
Real CVC Words
Real CVC words, like cat, bat, or sip, help children recognize familiar vocabulary and connect their decoding skills to meaningful language.
Nonsense CVC Words
Nonsense CVC words, like zog, vap, or rin, challenge students to focus purely on phonics, ensuring they’re truly blending and segmenting sounds rather than relying on memory. This balance strengthens their ability to decode unfamiliar words independently, an essential skill for becoming confident, fluent readers. Plus, nonsense words can add a fun, playful element to learning as kids giggle over silly-sounding combinations while reinforcing their phonics mastery.
