Are you looking for easy, fun ideas for your preschool apple unit? You are in the right place! This post will give you five easy ideas for your preschool, pre-k or Kindergarten students! All of the activities shown below can be found inside of my Preschool and Kindergarten Apple Activities.
Preparing to Teach a Preschool Apple Unit
The week before we study apples I send home a note like this asking parents to send apples to school. I don’t worry about the variety of apples, I just ask for three specific apple colors: red, green, and yellow.
This printable note is included inside of this resource so you can just print and send home! These apples will be used throughout the week for the activities listed below and more!
Most parents are happy to send apples to school and we always have more than enough for all of the activities. Some local grocery stores may also be willing to donate apples too. It never hurts to ask!
Five Easy Preschool Apple Activities
Let’s jump right in! Here are five easy preschool apple activities that can easily be completed in a classroom or even at home. All of the activities shown below can be found inside of my Preschool and Kindergarten Apple Activities.
Preschool Apple Tasting
Apple tasting is a great activity to do with your preschool or kindergarten students. This activity also easily ties in with math skills like counting and graphing. I like doing apple tasting with three different colored apples: red, green, and yellow.
Just cut up apples of each color and allow your students to taste all three. Of course, be sure to get parental permission before doing any activity that involves eating food.
Apple Tasting Graph
After tasting each color of an apple, students will decide which one is their favorite. Next, students will color an apple the color of the apple they liked best and put it on the class graph.
If you are doing this activity with older students, they can fill out their very own graph too! After all, students have voted it’s fun to see what the class’s favorite apple is!
Apple Writing
These simple writing activities are a fun addition to any preschool apple unit.
Apple Labeling
One of my favorite writing activities during our apple unit is cutting open an apple and labeling the parts inside. I usually introduce labeling by using sticky notes and labeling a friend in our class.
This makes a great lesson for writing workshop and students can practice labeling throughout the school year. Labeling the inside of an apple is a great way to discuss some science vocabulary too!
You can also create a large apple out of butcher paper to make interactive writing fun for students! We wrote these two simple sentences during the week of our apple unit: Apples are red. Apples are yellow.
If you teach preschool, be sure to check out my entire set of preschool journal writing prompts. A few prompts about apples are included inside of the It’s Harvest Time Preschool Journal Writing Prompts.
Apple Class Book
Class books also make a great writing activity for preschool students. This fun Apples on Top class book will be a hit with your students and fun counting practice!
Apple Pocket Chart
Pocket chart activities are some of my favorites to create! I love doing sentence scrambles with my students. This simple pocket chart activity is perfect for whole group time during your apple unit and then it can be moved into a literacy station. These sentences focus on sight words and color words.
Preschool Apple Science Activities
Does an apple sink or float? Does it depend on what color the apple is? Your students will love this simple and fun science experiment that can be completed as a class.
Students will use this response page to make predictions about what each color apple will do and then record their findings too! It’s very simple for young children to color and complete!
Apple Eruption Science
Apple eruptions are always fun too! Just cut the core out of an apple and fill it with baking soda. Next, allow students to pour vinegar inside the apple. You can add food coloring to the vinegar too if you’re feeling extra fun. This is a great activity to talk about cause and effect or before and after.
Make Crockpot Applesauce
Making applesauce is a great way to end your study of apples! I’m really not much of a cook, but I can definitely handle crockpot applesauce. My recipe just uses apples, sugar, water, and cinnamon!
Students will love sharing this recipe with their families and telling them about the experience. Oh, and warm crockpot applesauce is even tastier on top of some vanilla ice cream! Mmmm!
Apple Shapes
Preschool students will definitely be learning about 2-D shapes. Easily tie this learning skill into your apple unit with this free apple-shape tracing scavenger hunt.
You can read more about this activity in this post, Interactive Tracing Shape Worksheets.
Apple Play Dough Mats
Little ones can also practice building shapes with play dough using these apple themed play dough mats.
This is a great way to help little ones develop fine motor skills and shape identification and building.
